**Ask for letters of recommendation at least two weeks before you need them.  A letter written in haste may not be the letter you want so give your person time to do a great job for you.

**Always be polite.  No one really owes you letters of recommendation.  This is additional work which most of your teachers are happy to do for you, but do not take teachers' time for granted.

**Always ask someone who knows your best characteristics.

**The person you ask should be someone you know can absolutely, without a doubt, give you a positive recommendation.

**Provide specific information about the purpose of the letter such as scholarship or admissions.  If you have information with the application, show this information to the person who will write the letter.

**Complete the information sheet to give to the person writing your letter.

**Build positive relationships with adults in your life so that you have a plethora of choices when looking for a person to write a letter for you.
